Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriatic arthritis is an autoimmune disorder of skin disease with arthritic pain.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an arthritic condition that affects some people who have psoriasis, a serious skin condition. Both are autoimmune problems — disorders that occur when your body's immune system, which normally fights harmful organisms such as viruses and bacteria, begins to attack healthy cells and tissue.

However, some people with PsA can be helped by taking regular doses of dietary supplements that support the immune system.
Joint pain, stiffness and swelling are the main symptoms of this disorder. They can affect any part of your body, including your fingertips and spine, and can range from relatively mild to severe. Disease flares may alternate with periods of remission. This is usually accompanied by symptoms of the fingernails and toes, ranging from small pits in the nails to nearly complete destruction and crumbling as seen in fungal infections.

This disease can develop at any time, but it most commonly appears between the ages of 30 and 50 and affects men at a higher rate than women. Genes, the immune system and environmental factors are all believed to play a role in the onset of the disease.

No cure exists for this this disease, so the focus is on controlling symptoms and preventing damage to your body. Without treatment — and regular exercise — this can become quite disabling.

Early diagnosis and treatment can help slow the disease and preserve function and range of motion. Some early indicators of severe disease include onset at a young age, having many joints involved and spinal involvement. Good control of the skin disease may be valuable in the management of the arthritic disease.

Most people develop psoriasis first and are later diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis.
